Monyca Byrne-Wickey is the only female surfer in the country chosen by Nike to be one of the original six members of its 6.0 team. With focus, determination, and a spirited nature, this rural Maui local represented Hawaii at the ’05 and ’06 Quiksilver World Junior Pro, qualified for the NSSA finals in 2007, and took home the “Performer of the Day” award for her incredible surfing during the semifinal heat. She’s driven both in the water and out. Monyca is a 2008 ISA Individual Scholarship recipient and ISA Surfing Ambassador for her outstanding scholastic achievements and her success in the world of surfing.
Monyca also has a deep appreciation for Hawaiian culture, so you may find her taking time away from the water to compete in traditional woodworking or hula dancing. At the 28th Maui Technology Education Fair, Monyca crafted a Koa wood croquet mallet that qualified her for the Hawaii State Technology and Industrial Arts Fair where she received 2nd place for building a beautiful coffee table. But surfing is where her heart is—she literally crosses her heart every time she hits the water. Not much can come between the freedom she feels in the surf and her hopes of qualifying for the ASP World Tour.
