Mike Spinner - BMX
 |
With a name like Mike Spinner it’s no surprise that he’s the first BMX rider to ever land a 1080. Spinning is his thing. In 2006, Spinner landed the first-ever 720 tailwhip at the Free Flow Tour finals in Portland, OR where he went on to win the comp and then proceed to his first pro event, the Dew Tour Finals in Orlando, FL. A year later, he stuck the first-ever 1080 at the X Air Contest in New Zealand and landed in second place behind legendary BMX pro Dave Mirra. Spinner said that “[Mirra] threw his no-handed 360 back flip and that’s the best trick ever, so I had to throw my trick and it worked.”
That must have been a prophetic moment for Spinner, now 19, whose foray into BMX began at age 12 when he saw guys like Mirra at the X Games on TV and decided that that’s what he wanted to do. He started out like most kids, messing around doing bunny hops on curbs with his friends in Miami. Then it became something more: summers tail-whipping into the foam pits at Camp Woodward, doing a few comps and eventually—as the name would suggest—spinning his way into the pro ranks.
