In Hawaiian, Kai means “the sea.” Watching Maui-surfer Kai Barger, it’s clear that he has the ocean deep in his soul. At four years old he started riding waves on the nose of his dad’s longboard. Today the goofy-footer is driving the progression of surfing. He can often be found surfing up the road from his house at Ho’okipa on Maui’s North Shore, but his favorite spots are kept secret. This is Kai’s last year of high school and the stellar student is stoked to start concentrating on just his surfing this year. NSSA and WQS events will quickly fill in the blanks left by school. Last year, Kai went to surfer’s paradise, Bali, Indonesia, with a crew of his friends from Maui. “Bali was the sickest place that I’ve been so far,” Kai says. But his sites are now set on visiting Peru and then on making the WCT Top 44 by 2010. That’s a big goal, but with a pocket full of NSSA titles, Kai is well on his way.
